The Lived Theology and Race Workgroup

Ellen T. Armour

Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies (Rhodes College). B.A. Humanities (Stetson University); M.A. and Ph.D. Religion (Vanderbilt University).

Professor Armour's research involves using deconstruction to address issues of racial and sexual difference in theology. She is the author of Deconstruction, Feminist Theology and the Problem of Difference: Subverting the Race/Gender Divide (University of Chicago Press, 1999). She is currently involved in two book projects. With Susan St. Ville, Armour is co-editing a volume of essays by religion scholars using Judith Butler's work. Dr. Armour's current book project involves developing resources for thinking the sacred that can sustain attention to racial and sexual differences.

Professor Armour became interested in the intersection between race and gender when she was serving as Coordinator of the Office of Women's Concerns at Vanderbilt Divinity School. In that capacity -- and later, informally -- she participated in cross-racial coalitions on campus to try to help the Divinity School community deal with racial tensions and injustices. Professor Armour regularly teaches laity at various churches in Memphis.
