Barbara Holmes
Associate Professor of Ethics and African American Religious Studies (Memphis Theological Seminary). B.A. Sociology (University of Connecticut); M.S. Education (Southern Connecticut University); J.D. (Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University); M.Div. (Columbia Theological Seminary); Ph.D. Religion and Ethics (Vanderbilt University).
Professor Holmes is an ordained minister in the Apostolic Holiness tradition and a member of the Georgia and Florida Bars. She practiced law in Florida, Georgia, and Texas. Her research interests include cultural studies, science and religion, ethics, law, African Diasporan religions, ethnic mysticism, theology, and spirituality.
A new book entitled Break Every Yoke: Quantum and Cosmological Meditations on Race, Identity and the Moral Life will be published Spring 2002 by Trinity Press International. Other publications include: A Private Woman in Public Spaces: Barbara Jordan's Speeches on Ethics, Public Religion and Law (Trinity Press International, 2000) and selected biographical sketches in Marcia Riggs' book Can I Get A Witness (Orbis Books, 1997). Holmes has written two articles for The Other Side: "Back to Dust" (Jan/Feb 1997) and "Back to the Bus" (July/August 2000). She has also co-authored articles with the Hon. S.H. Winfield including, "Consolation in the Midst of Conflict" in Conflict and Community in the Corinthian Church ed, J. Shannon Clarkson (Women's Division, General Board of Global Ministries, United Methodist Church, 2000) and "Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution" in The Boundaries of Law, Politics, and Religion ed, Lewis Baldwin (University of Notre Dame Press, 2002).
Professor Holmes is the recipient of pedagogical grants from the FSC Foundation, Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning, and The Center for the Natural Sciences and Theology/ JohnTempleton Religion and Science 2001 syllabus award. Holmes has two sons Marcus and Jason who live in Berkeley California. They work in the movie industry directing and engineering music and sound tracks at ILM.
