Heather Warren
Associate Professor of Religious Studies (University of Virginia). B.A. (Cornell University); B.A. Theology (Oxford University); M.Div. (Emory University); Ph.D. American Religious History (Johns Hopkins University).
Professor Warren was born in Scotland, but grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. In college she worked for Mountain T.O.P. (the Tennessee Outreach Program), a church-related project for youth and adults serving the people of the Cumberland Mountains, and held the position of director for a two-county operation her third summer. Upon graduation from seminary, she was ordained a minister in the United Methodist Church and pastored two churches for two years in southern Maryland.
After completing her doctorate, Warren accepted a position as Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at U.Va. Several of her articles have appeared in print, and in 1997, her book, Theologians of a New World Order (Oxford), was published. She teaches American religious history at the graduate and undergraduate levels as well as introductory courses on the western religious traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) and religion in America since 1865. She has served on many departmental, college, university, and extra-mural professional committees.
Professor Warren is married to Bill Burgess, has two children (Hannah age 6 and Benedict age 4), and enjoys hiking and working on the Appalachian Trail.
