S. Jonathan Bass
S. Jonathan Bass is professor and chair of the history department, and university historian at Samford University. His areas of expertise include the civil rights movement, the American south, and legal history. His first book, Blessed are the Peacemakers: Martin Luther King, Jr., Eight White Religious Leaders and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” came out in 2001 and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. His second book, He Calls Me By Lightning: The Life of Caliph Washington and the Forgotten Saga of Jim Crow, Southern Justice, and the Death Penalty came out in 2017.
