The American Organizing Tradition
University, Mississippi and Charlottesville, Virginia
Susan Glisson has been Executive Director of the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation since 2002. Founded in 1999, the Institute builds more inclusive communities by promoting diversity and citizenship and by supporting projects that help communities solve local challenges. During the 2008 Spring Institute for Lived Theology (SILT), Glisson presents her work in redressing old and new wrongs, and forming a space for dialogue on issues of race and priviledge in America with often recalcitrant citizens. As Glisson says in this recording, "the work of the Winter Institute takes place between these two poles: of whites who do not believe they should have to ask for forgiveness and blacks who do not want to forgive. Somewhere in between is the need for truth-telling, justice, compassion, and patience--none of which are easy or simple."
Rydell Payne, Executive Director of Charlottesville Abundant Life Ministries (CALM), responds.
