Sandtown Habitat for Humanity

Baltimore, Maryland

In a panel on Building Beloved Communities during SILT 2006, LaVerne and Al Stokes (moderated by Mark Gornik, the founding pastor of New Song Sandtown) discuss the interaction between faith and community development.

LaVerne Stokes is the Executive Director of Sandtown Habitat for Humanity, as well as a homeowner in that program. She was born and raised in Sandtown and is well recognized in the community as well as nationally as a leader in faith-based community development. At the time of this talk, Sandtown Habitat was building about 40-50 homes per year. LaVerne and her husband Al are also leaders in their church and are co-chairing a community center in Baltimore.
