Trans-Pacific Transpositions: Continuities and discontinuities in Chinese North American Protestantism since 1965

Posted on December 26, 2015 by PLT Staff

Paper presented by Timothy Tseng at the fourth meeting of the Lived Theology and Race Workgroup in Charlottesville, Virginia. Tseng details the history of the Chinese Christian church in America and discusses the theology that links these churches to social responsibility.

Excerpt: “But among immigrant Chinese evangelicals, this renewed interest in ‘civic duty’ confirms the argument in this chapter that links nationalism and social responsibility. It is possible, therefore, that a new transpacific transposition is underway which may reconcile Chinese evangelicalism with a history and tradition of Chinese Protestant social responsibility.”
