Historical Perspectives on Faith-Based Organizations and Community Development

Posted on December 26, 2015 by PLT Staff

Paper presented by Heather Warren at the third meeting of the Lived Theology and Community Building Workgroup in Los Angeles. Warren suggests ways of thinking about faith-based organizations (FBOs) historically. She interweaves theology with history to give context to religious communities, ideas, and history.

Excerpt: “We can gain a more complete understanding of people’s motives and aspirations if we explore the way their understandings of traditional Protestant doctrines–sin, grace, salvation, mission, the nature of God (to name a few)–did or did not find expression in their lives, socially as well as individually, and why. The daring might even learn more about the responsive relation between the divine nature and human nature as it has unfolded in time.”
