After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging (video)

Posted on October 14, 2021 by PLT Staff

Virtual lecture given by Professor Willie James Jennings, as part of the Lift Every Voice and Teach workgroup (October 9, 2021). Jennings explains how he wrote his book After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging (Eerdmans, 2020) after trying to make sense of something amiss in the predominantly white academic world. That something was the overarching image of a white, self-sufficient man that Western education pushes those in the academy to become. Jennings proposes an alternative image of Jesus and the crowd, at the heart of which is a fundamentally different kind of cultivation that draws people together. Jennings ultimately hopes that After Whiteness can generate a conversation that changes everything, especially the formation of and teaching life of professors.

Excerpt: “The older I get, the more I appreciate those who are on this journey we call teaching, this journey we call higher education, and we do so with the name ‘Christian’ around them. So, I am glad to be in the presence of my siblings.”
