Honest Patriots: Loving a Country Enough to Remember its Misdeeds (audio)

Posted on December 23, 2015 by PLT Staff

Capps lecture given by Donald Shriver at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. Beginning with a reflection on his father’s pride at being a Virginian, Shriver reflects on the ambivalent relationship to the past that that many Southerners have. On the one hand, there is deep pride in their origins, and on the other, great pain from the Civil War. Shriver expands upon this theme, exploring the role of remembering the past in the American South, South Africa and Germany. To browse all the lectures given as part of the Capps Lecture series, click here. Excerpt: “Visit modern Germany for a cure to the prejudice that it is impossible for a nation to repent. Visit it for understanding that there is such a thing as the politics of repentance.”
